Bing LUO

Chinese double bassist Bing LUO is a professor of double bass at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; he has trained many young double bassists, holders of International Prizes.

Professor of double bass, performer, and head of the strings department (cello, double bass, and harp) at the Shanghai Conservatory's affiliated College Music School. He is currently an associate professor of double bass in the same department and a thesis supervisor at the Shanghai Conservatory. Mr. Luo is also a member of the board of directors of the strings department of the Chinese Musicians Association and a visiting professor at Texas Christian University (Texas, USA). He graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory, where he studied with Professor Yimin Tang, and continued his studies at the University of Tromsø in Norway, specializing in double bass performance with Professor Sewvin Haugen.

As an orchestral musician, Professor Luo has been invited to perform with the Tromsø Symphony Orchestra. In the field of chamber music, he has collaborated with the musicians of the Narvik Baroque Chamber Orchestra. Professor Luo was a member of the inaugural Seoul International Alliance Orchestra in 2007 and joined the Global Chinese Orchestra Alliance in 2013 and 2016. He has been invited to give masterclasses and lectures at Texas Christian University (Texas, USA), the University of Texas at Austin (Texas, USA), the Interlochen Arts Academy (Michigan, USA), San Francisco State University (California, USA), the Kaleidoscope Double Bass Festival 2015 (Germany), the Music Middle School affiliated with the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, and the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Bing was also a member of the jury for the 2020 Johann Matthias Sperger Double Bass Competition.

With nearly 30 years of teaching experience, Professor Luo has seen his students win over 100 prizes at prestigious double bass competitions, both in China and abroad. Notably, his students in the youth category (ages 15-18) of the International Society of Double Bassists (ISB) competition—Zhixiong Liu (2013), Yue Zhang (2019), and Zichen Zhang (2023)—achieved first place consecutively. This performance is a record for double bass students trained in China in major international competitions. At the 2023 ISB competition, all the prizes in the under-14 category were won by his students, a first in ISB history: for the first time, all the winners in a single category were Chinese.

In addition to his dedication to teaching, Professor Luo not only imparts knowledge to his students but also possesses a deep understanding of related academic research topics. He has received more than 20 teaching excellence awards, both nationally and internationally.

Bing has published scientific articles, including "Intensive Training for the Left Hand of the Double Bass" and "Creation and Optimization of Transposed Works for Double Bass." He has also published several collections of sheet music, including "Scales and Arpeggios for Double Bass," "Kreutzer – 18 Studies for Double Bass," "Kayser – 36 Studies for Double Bass," and a collection of textbooks for the string department (cello, double bass, and harp) of the music college affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
