Eric MATHOT

Belgian double bassist Eric MATHOT, active in the early music scene, has been teaching double bass for 45 years, currently at the Royal Conservatory of LIEGE

Eric MATHOT completed his musical studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Mons (Belgium) where he obtained Higher Diplomas in chamber music and double bass (classes of Thérèse-Marie GILISSEN, Fernand FONTAINE, Christian VANDERBORGH). He also furthered his studies with Maurice AERTS.

A member of the World Youth Musical Orchestra (1984), he has been part of several orchestras: the "RTBF Orchestra", the "National Orchestra of Belgium".

Subsequently, Eric Mathot embarked on a freelance career. Best known for his involvement in the performance of Baroque and Classical music on period instruments, he has performed with Belgian orchestras and ensembles such as La Petite Bande (S. Kuijken, G. Leonhardt), Il Fondamento, Ricercar Consort, and Les Agrémens; and with French orchestras including Cappella Mediterranea (L. Garcia Alarcón), Les Musiciens du Louvre (M. Minkowski), and the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées (Ph. Herreweghe).

He performed in traditional orchestras such as the Beethoven Academie, I Fiamminghi, the Wallonia Chamber Orchestra, the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra, the Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra, …

Eric Mathot also dedicated himself for about twenty years to contemporary music, creation, etc.; with the Musiques Nouvelles ensemble, Champs d'Action, the ensemble 88 (Netherlands),

In 1996 he founded the Titanic Ensemble, in 2001 the TIVOLI BAND, specializing in the field of salon music, jazz and cinema from the first half of the 20th century… He has conducted other orchestras in the same type of repertoire.

These repertoires are central to his research throughout Europe and America. Eric Mathot has assembled two collections bearing his name, comprising over 50,000 scores, documents, and several thousand recordings. All these diverse musical experiences have resulted in the recording of over 140 CDs.
